Vijender confident of maintaining winning streak

Mumbai, Aug 2 (IANS) Indian boxing star Vijender Singh asserted on Wednesday that he is confident of beating Zulpikar Maimaitiali of China in their double title fight on August 5 and maintain his all-win record.

“I am eagerly waiting for Saturday as it’s going to be a perfect 9-0 and for me. It’s fight time, I’m fit and I’m ready. Zulpikar has been talking a lot in the last few days now I will close his mouth and knock him out to win double title fight,” Vijender said after training.

“I know it’s not an easy fight but I am confident that with my hard work I will win it for my country and our Chinese counterpart will return home empty handed.”

Vijender, who has won all of his previous eight fights in pro boxing, holds the Asia Pacific Middleweight title while Zulpikar — another undefeated boxer — is the current Asia Pacific Super Middleweight champion.

The winner of Saturday’s fight will take over the title of his opponent while retaining his current title, thus becoming the numero uno boxer across two weight categories.

On his preparations, Vijender said: “I am only listening to what my trainer is asking me to do. He knows what exactly to I need to do and how do I need to train. I am also following a very strict diet,”

Vijender and Zulpikar have exchanged heated words in recent days in an attempt to gain the psychological advantage in the run up to the fight.

The Haryana pugilist is determined not to lose his focus and let his performance do the talking.

“These are just ways to try and play mind games with your opponent, what eventually happens is in front of the entire nation in the ring,” the 2008 Beijing Olympics bronze medallist said.

Vijender’s trainer Lee Beard is also confident of his ward’s chances.

“I tell Vijender to be calm in the ring. Yes, there are a couple of techniques that we need to change but most important is the mind, we need to keep the mid in control to be able to win,” the British coach said.
