Global business consultancy and IT outsourcing company highlights milestones and innovation in business sustainability
WESTBOROUGH, Mass., – (February 11, 2015) – Virtusa Corporation (NASDAQ GS: VRTU), a global business consulting and IT outsourcing company that combines innovation, technology leadership and industry solutions to transform the customer experience, today announced several milestones that support the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainable global business practices. Highlighting the achievements is Virtusa’s Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) score of 84 out of a possible 100, a full 31 points above the supply chain average for 2014. The recognition further supports the company’s overall goal of providing quality attention to its clients and the environment, equally.
In recognition of its industry-leading sustainable practices, Virtusa has been honored with several awards across the globe. These awards include being named a finalist in the United States Secretary of State Award for Corporate Excellence (2008), selected as a Laureate in the Computerworld Honors Program (2011), special award at the 18th Annual Japan Sri Lanka Cultural Association (JASTECA) Award and several National Green Awards in Sri Lanka (2012 and 2014).
“Virtusa is making great strides in its commitment to reduce its environmental footprint,” said Denver De Zylva, senior director-Shared Services, who drives sustainable practices at Virtusa. “By putting sustainability at the core of our businesses we not only reduce our company’s impact on the environment but we transfer that into the services we offer our clients, as well.”
Sustainability highlights include:
- Doing more with less – through its environmental management system, branded Code Green, Virtusa has put in place several measures to reduce its environmental impacts. These include optimizing energy usage through space and server consolidation and a strict policy to purchase energy efficient products. In FY14, Virtusa reduced GHG emissions by 18 percent and energy consumption by 22 percent per full time employee and water consumption per employee by 18 percent. Also, from FY11 to FY14 Virtusa recycled 10,450 kg of paper and 5461 kg of plastic.
- Environment friendly operations – 87 percent of Virtusa’s real estate is certified for ISO 14001 environmental management and 34 percent of all real estate meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards with Virtusa’s Hyderabad campus being awarded the LEED India “Gold” rating by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
- Partnering for sustainability – Virtusa has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) since 2008. Virtusa is also a member of the UNGC Business for Peace (B4P) initiative and was featured as one of the twenty case studies in the UNGC Responsible Business Advancing Peace publication in 2013
- Leadership in the community – Virtusa continues to encourage its employees to give back both to the environment and the community. Through initiatives like Cycle to Work Day, the annual Green Walkathon/Cyclathon and World Environment Day Virtusans regularly demonstrate their commitment to a cleaner planet. The company also firmly believes that true corporate sustainability requires making a difference in the community. In collaboration with nonprofits, Virtusa donated essential items (including food, clothes, blankets, water and medicine) to families affected by regional flooding and droughts in India and Sri Lanka. In addition, Virtusa has in place an initiative named Tech Reach, where employees can work on software projects for social good. These projects include developing an open source disaster management system and an open source school management system.
