VideoLAN, makers of VLC Player has announced 360 degree support for the media player. This means, VLC player users will now be able to play videos and view photos in 360 degree view. With the rollout of 360 degree support, VLC has become the first major video player app to play 360 degree videos out of the box.
The company launched a new technical preview that lets users play 360-degree videos on Windows and Macs. The VLC 360-degree will be available in technical preview for few more days as the company plans to release an all-new VLC 3.0 by end of november with all new features.To make VLC 360° a reality, the open source organization worked with Giroptic, a company that makes a consumer grade 360-degree camera.
“VLC is one of the video players most widely used in the world. We are very proud to contribute our expertise in 360 degree to this open source player. This will allow the millions of VLC users to take full advantage of a promising new technology and be widely involved in its democratisation,” said Richard Ollier, Co-Founder and CEO of Giroptic.
VLC 360 degree support will allow users to playback 360 videos, photos and Panoramas, display modes with Zoom and control it with keyboard and mouse. According to the company, the future releases of VLC 360 will be available for Android, iOS and Xbox One.
The media player might support VR headsets such as Vive, Daydream, Oculus or OSVR in 2017 as well. VLC 360 will feature 3D audio playback and head tracking headphones.
