Aiming to maintain its military superiority and protect its interests globally, US President Donald Trump has proposed to increase the country’s defense spending by around 10% at $54 billion. The funds will be made available by cutting down on non-defense spending such as a massive reduction in foreign aid. Speaking about the proposal, Trump said, “This budget will be a public safety and national security budget. It will include an historic increase in defense spending to rebuild the depleted military of the United States of America at a time we most need it.”
The proposed increase in US defense budget comes in the wake of the rising dominance of China, both in economic and military terms. The hostilities between US and China have increased in recent times, which may be a reason for the United States to boost its firepower. It may be recalled that earlier this month, China had also announced plans to boost its naval defense capabilities.
The increased defense spending will be used for building superior military aircrafts and ships. It will also be used to augment military presence at strategic locations such as South China Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
