What is the difference between Celeron and Pentium Processor?

When we talk about computer applications, options will differ among users because people have different choice and needs. Fortunately, there are different kinds of processors, so you can choose the one that meets your requirement.

Exclusively from Intel, there are two popular models of the computer processor. They are Celeron and Pentium processor with HT technology. There are 4 versions of Pentium processors, Pentium to Pentium 4. Each one of these Pentium processors is more powerful than its predecessor. However, the Celeron processors don’t have any version numbers.

To know the difference between the two processors, continue reading the below points:

  • Improved Version:

The Pentium processor was improved by Intel after releasing the 1st version. These improvements were done up till Pentium 4. The Celeron design was produced by Intel simultaneously while developing Pentium 2. Both the processors occupied the marketplace alongside one another. However, Celeron processors are comparatively cheaper than Pentium processors.

  • Clock Speed:

The Pentium line of processors is a more powerful version than Celeron. The clock

speed of Celeron processors is lower than the Pentium processors. Most of the Celeron chips are based on Pentium 2 and Pentium 3 cores and move at a clock speed of 1.4 GHz or less. 1.6 GHz to 2.4 GHz is the clock speed range. The maximum clock speed of a CPU ranges from 266 MHz to 3.6 GHz. The fastest Celeron processor has a clock speed of 2.8 GHz, whereas the fastest processor in the Pentium line has a clock speed of 3.8 GHz.

  • Cache memory:

The microchip of Celeron includes level 1 and level 2 cache. Celeron chip has less cache memory than Pentium microchip. The fasted bus speed of Celeron processors is   400 MHz which carries only 128KB of Cache memory, whereas the bus speed of Pentium is 1,066 MHz. Pentium chips have a cache memory four times of that of Celeron chips. This means that the Pentium processor communicates much faster with other devices of the computer such as hard drive, screen, keyboard than Celeron processor. However, the speeds can be closely comparable, considering  L2 cache of Celeron which is not the case with Pentium 2. This showcases the overall performance of the computer.

Hence, when you compare both Pentium and Celeron processors, you will observe that both the processors have the same speed but are still different in a few ways. Although, Celeron is less powerful as compared to Pentium, both the processors deliver the best performance at budget-friendly prices.

Celeron processors are usually cheap as compared to the version of Pentium when you look for value over performance. If you want the fastest machine, then Pentium is the right choice for you. It has the highest clock speed as well as the fastest system bus. However, make sure you have a good grasp of your needs so you can find the right processor that is best suited for you.
