For some Facebook users on iOS and Android, it was a surprise to find a new rocket icon. Clicking on the rocket icon displays a second News Feed that appears to be a hybrid creation, involving a mix of Taboola ads and Snapchat’s Discover tab. Interestingly, the second News Feed that shows up displays videos, stories and other content from pages that users don’t currently like. Sources at Facebook said that the News Feed associated with the rocket icon is based on a new algorithm that customizes content as per the recent browsing activity of users. This feature is currently in test mode and is available to only a select number of users.
In another development, Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp is planning to launch digital payment service in India. It may be recalled that a meeting had taken place in February, where WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton had discussed various digital commerce possibilities with IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. With more than 200 million users, India is the biggest market for WhatsApp. The company is currently looking to hire a digital transactions head for the country.
