Wipro said on Friday that it has received a threat email asking a ransom of Rs.500 crores to be paid in bitcoins failing which their employees would be attacked with highly toxic ricin. The mail said around 1 kg of ricin would be used to kill the employees and the poison may be put in cafeteria food, toilet seats and toilet papers which would go unsuspected.
The mail was sent to Wipro’s sarjapura road office reception, according to S Ravi, additional commissioner of police, cyber crime – Bangalore and is said to have originated from the id ‘[email protected]’
It is to be noted that barely a month ago, the office of Infosys at Sholinganallur office also received a Rs.500 crore demand where in an unidentified person has dropped a parcel proclaiming it to be anthrax powder.
“Wipro has filed a complaint with the local law enforcement authorities after receiving a threatening letter from an unidentified source. Wipro has augmented security measures at all its office locations. There is no impact on the company’s operations. We have no further comment as the investigation is going on,” said a spokesperson from Wipro.
Following the threat, Wipro has beefed up its security across its office.
