In yet another case that highlights the misuse of triple talaq, a woman was given triple talaq over phone after her husband got to know that she had given birth to a baby girl. What is even more surprising is that the victim in this case is national-level netball player Shumaila Javed, who lives in Amroha, which is around 380 km from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. Shumaila has raised the issue on social media and she wants Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to look into the matter.
A similar case has also been reported from Agra, where a woman was given talaq after she gave birth to twin girls. The woman’s husband first issued the talaq on Facebook and followed it by a text message on mobile phone. It was quite shocking for the woman to realize that her marriage has been cancelled so abruptly. It may be recalled that petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the validity of triple talaq, after several women complained that they had been divorced through Facebook, WhatsApp, via postcard and even through a newspaper advertisement.
The Supreme Court will look into the issue of triple talaq soon. The center has already made its stand clear that triple talaq is a violation of fundamental rights and should be banned in the country.
