Press monitoring organisation Middle East Monitor (MEMO) said yesterday that Saudi Arabia has granted citizenship to the controversial Islamic preacher – Zakir Naik. This was done to evade the arrest warrant issued by Interpol. King Salman himself personally intervened to ensure that he has been granted the citizenship.
Saudi and India does not have a treaty to extradite prisoners and hence the arrest of Zakir Naik now would become a serious trouble for the Indian Government.
The news is a shocker for Indian Government which on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant for his alleged role in a terror case. National Investigation Agency court has issued this. Only after arresting him, the entire conspiracy can be untangled, the NIA said. It is also to be noted that Naik was issued another non-bailable warrant under a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate as well.
Naik fled India last year to evade arrest after some Dhaka terror attack perpetrators told that the attack was inspired by him where he was booked under section 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) of the Indian Penal Code and the UAPA.
Naik heads the Islamic Research Foundation.
