9-year-old files case against Union government for inaction on climate change

9-year-old Ridhima Pandey has registered a legal case with the National Green Tribunal (NGT), asking the court to take action against the Central government for their inability to address issues related to climate change. In the 52-page petition that she has filed with the NGT, Ridhima has underlined the growing concern over pollution and environmental degradation in the country. The petition requests the tribunal to direct the government to take appropriate action to reduce and minimize the adverse effects of climate change.

NGT has found merit in the petition and has accepted it. The tribunal has directed the Environment Ministry and the Central Pollution Control Board to file their response within 2 weeks. It may be recalled that 4 of the top 10 most polluted cities in the world are in India. Also, India is second in the list of countries that have registered the most number of deaths resulting from air pollution. Ridhima Pandey is the daughter of an environmental activist and has personally experienced the devastating effects of climate change.
