A passport office every 50 km; government unveils its ambitious plan

In a welcome development, the government has launched 149 new Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). While announcing the launch of the new POPSKs, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj also talked about the government’s ambitious plan to open a passport center every 50 km across the country. She said that the government’s target is to ensure that no one has to travel more than 50 km to get a passport.

It may be recalled that the government had earlier also opened 86 POPSKs across the country. The POPSK program is a joint initiative by the MEA and the Department of Post. Since coming to power, the central government has consistently focused on opening new passport centers for the benefit of the citizens.

Before the BJP came to power at the center, there were only 77 passport centers. However, now, the number of passport centers has increased to 251 including PSKs and POPSKs. Currently 810 more head post officers are being evaluated to examine the possibility of opening more POPSKs. These passport centers will greatly benefit people living in remote areas of the country.
