Acid thrown on woman for refusing triple talaq over phone

A Muslim woman in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh has alleged that her in-laws attacked her with acid after she refused to accept triple talaq over phone. The 40-year old woman named Rehana was attacked in Neuria area of Pilibhit. Reports indicate that she has sustained burn injuries on her back. In the report filed with the police, Rehana has stated that she has been married since 18 years. Soon after her marriage, she went to United States with her husband Matlub. However, since the past few years, their relationship was not going on so well. They came to India in 2011 and stayed in the country for some time. Later, her husband Matlub went back to United States and promised to her that he will call her there after a few days.

However, instead of taking Rehana to United States, Matlub called Rehana and divorced her over the phone. This was completely unacceptable to Rehana and she refused to accept the triple talaq over phone. Rehana has filed a complaint with the police who are investigating the case. The incident highlights the suffering caused by triple talaq and makes a case for its prohibition across India.
