After Gurdaspur win, Congress berates BJP; Rahul gains in stature

Congress had already won Punjab in the assembly elections conducted earlier this year and now it has won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat also. The Gurdaspur seat had fallen vacant after the death of Vinod Khanna, who had joined the BJP after a successful career in the film industry. Since Congress had won the assembly elections with a huge majority, the Gurdaspur seat had become a prestige issue for the Congress and it wanted to win it. Today, Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar defeated Swaran Salaria of BJP by a singificant margin of around 2 lakh votes. Soon after the victory, many Congress leaders were ecstatic. However, they appeared to be overwhelmed with the victory, as they started targeting the BJP after the win. Some leaders said that the Congress winning the Gurdaspur seat is proof that BJP’s power is declining. However, it would be too early to suggest such things.

After the win, talks of promoting Rahul to Congress president post has started to gain momentum. Senior Congress leader and state minister Navjot Sidhu said that the Gurdaspur win is the best Diwali gift for the new would be Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Senior leader Salman Khursid also talked about the topic of making Rahul Gandhi the president of Congress. Experts however have cautioned about giving the president’s position to Rahul Gandhi since Rahul does not have any experience at the grassroots level. Experts said that just giving speeches in various places does not make for a good leader. Due to lack of a proper leader at the top, decision making would be impacted.
