B P Saroj is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Machhlishahr in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the 2019 general elections, Saroj defeated his nearest rival Tribhuvan Ram of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). It was one of the most closely contested elections in 2019. Saroj won by just 181 votes, which was the lowest margin win in 2019 general elections. The tough fight was because of the alliance between BSP and Samajwadi Party (SP), who had fought the elections together. The close fight had also created a lot of controversy and final results were declared after much deliberation from both parties.
It may be recalled that B P Saroj was earlier with BSP. He had fought the 2014 general elections from BSP ticket. However, at that time, he was defeated by Ram Chandra Nishad (BJP). Saroj switched to BJP and contested the 2019 general elections from the party’s ticket. Sitting BJP MP Ram Chandra Nishad was denied the ticket in 2019, as the party was focusing on bringing new faces in the elections. With Saroj contesting from Machhlishahr, BJP’s vote share in the constituency improved by 3.63% in 2019.
