Murder mysteries have the same basic theme, but they can still entertain and intrigue provided that they offer something new to the audience. Badla comes across as a dynamic story, combining the thrills of both revenge and murder mystery. The movie has ample shades of grey, which makes it difficult to differentiate between the good and bad. Badla is based on Spanish movie The Invisible Guest, but a lot of changes have been introduced to make it relevant in the Indian context.
The movie is about Naina (Taapsee Pannu) who is alleged to have killed her partner Arjun (Tony Luke). However, Naina denies her role in the murder. Since the evidence points to her involvement, she decides to hire one of the best advocates Badal Gupta (Amitabh Bachchan) to fight her case. When Naina and Badal interact, the story gets even more complicated, as a number of other events are revealed whereas some are held back. Naina tells Badal everything he wants to know, but is she telling the truth?
The rapport between Amitabh and Taapsee is worth watching, and it seems even better than their earlier collaboration in Pink. The movie hinges a lot of its dialogues and quite a significant portion just has interactions between Amitabh and Taapsee. However, this is nowhere close to boring. It’s actually an engaging experience to witness such interesting conversations. Other actors such as Amrita Singh and Tony Luke have also delivered good performances. Dialogues have been written with great finesse and appear relevant to the story. Credit for the movie also goes to cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay, editor Monisha R Baldawa and background score creator Clinton Cerejo. Director Sujoy Ghosh has once again delivered a riveting story, which will help him maintain his edge in launching complex thrillers.
If you like revenge stories and murder mysteries, you should definitely watch Badla. The movie comes across as a captivating mystery and has a thrilling climax to surprise you at the end.
