After an RSS activist was killed in Kerala, the BJP called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown, which significantly affected normal life in the city. The shutdown continued even when eight people have been arrested in connection with the murder of RSS activist. It is being alleged that the killers are linked to the ruling CPI-M. Responding to the killing of the RSS activist, Governor P. Sathasivam had summoned Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss the law and order situation in the state. Vijayan assured the Governor that action would be taken against the people involved in the murder and no one will be spared even if they have political connections. Union Home Minister also asked Vijayan to put an end to political violence in the state.
The day-long shutdown was called by BJP after the murder of RSS activist E. Rajesh, a 34-year old individual. He was hacked to death on Saturday and he died a few hours later. Due to the day-long protest, all shops and markets remained closed and even public vehicles were not allowed to operate. Some of the vehicles that dared to challenge the shutdown had to face the anger of BJP and RSS activists. According to Kerala police chief, all those involved in the murder have been arrested except one accused. Preliminary investigations reveal that the murder took place as a mix of both personal and political rivalry. The police are currently interrogating the suspects.
