Congress defends Ahmed Patel; says charges of ISIS link not true

After there were allegations that Congress leader Ahmed Patel was linked to an ISIS operative, the Congress party has come out in defense of Patel and said that the allegations are baseless. Earlier, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani had demanded resignation of Ahmed Patel from Rajya Sabha since it was alleged that he was associated with an ISIS operative. It has been alleged that the ISIS operative was employed at a hospital where Ahmed Patel was a trustee. As the allegations of terror links gained momentum, the Congress came out with an official statement claiming the charges against Ahmed Patel to be baseless. Congress also attacked the BJP, saying that the allegations are part of a controversy to tarnish the image of Ahmed Patel and Congress party.

Speaking about the issue, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that neither Ahmed Patel nor any of his family members worked as trustees of the hospital. Surjewala said that the topic of national security is being used to tarnish the image of Ahmed Patel. He said that Congress knows what national security is, as history also makes it evident with the death of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He said these leaders sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism. Surjewala further said that the state government is doing all this since they are afraid to lose in the assembly elections. However, this statement is misleading since various pre-poll surveys have shown that BJP is heading for a win in Gujarat.
