A day after Akhilesh Yadav acquired full control of Samajwadi Party (SP) based on Election Commission’s approval, AICC General Secretary in-charge of the State Ghulam Nabi Azad announced today that Congress and SP will come together to form an alliance for the forthcoming UP polls.
He further stated that the details of the alliance are being worked out and a seat-sharing formula will be announced within the next 2-3 days. Sources have reported that Akhilesh Yadav may visit Delhi soon to hold discussions with Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi.
The alliance will seek to fight communal forces and promote secularism. SP general secretary Ramgopal Yadav is also hopeful that such an alliance will soon become a reality. As per experts, an alliance of Congress and SP would pose a tough challenge to BJP and allies in the forthcoming UP Polls. Experts also said that Congress may be offered around 90 to 100 seats. There may also be plans to induct Ajit Singh’s RLD as a junior partner in the grand secular alliance.
Congress and SP leaders would have to work fast to finalize the details of the alliance since very few days are left for the UP polls, which will be conducted in 2 phases on February 11 and 15.
