Congress wins Punjab assembly elections; big loss for AAP

While earlier predictions had talked about the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) winning the assembly elections in Punjab, the Congress has sprung up a surprise by registering a thumping victory in the State. The Congress has won 77 seats in the 117-member assembly, which is way ahead of all other parties. Congress leaders have thanked Captain Amarinder Singh for leading the party to victory in Punjab.

Coincidentally, it is Singh’s 75th birthday today, which gives a sense as if fate is entirely with him. With this major win, the Congress will return to rule in Punjab after a gap of 10 years. The seats required to form the government in Punjab is 59, and the Congress is way ahead at 77. Captain Amarinder Singh said that his first priority will be fight drugs.

The final tally for Punjab is as follows:

  • Congress – 77
  • AAP+ – 22
  • Akali+ – 18

The results in Punjab have turned out to be a big letdown for the AAP. Sources have said that AAP workers had already gotten all the stuff required for celebrations such as colors, balloons, flags, etc. but the party never quite started, as Punjab gave its majority vote to Congress.
