The Election Commission (EC) has taken cognizance of recent inflammatory speech of BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj. The Congress filed a complaint regarding the use of language and religious sentiment hurt case at EC against Sakshi Maharaj.
The notice has been served on the grounds of allegedly hurting the religious sentiments and promoting enmity on the basis of religion in election due Uttar Pradesh state.
The EC has asked Sakshi Maharaj to revert with his answers by January 11. It has also threatened to initiate further actions if the MP doesn’t follow the time-line.

It is worth noting that poll-bound state Uttar Pradesh in under Model Code of Conduct since the EC decided the polling dates.
The EC has sighted Supreme Court’s judgment where invoking religion, case or corrupt practice under the Representation of People Act (RPA). It has demanded answered from Sakhi Maharaj on RPA basis.
Recently a police case was also registered against Sakshi Maharaj because of the same inflammatory speech. The EC also mentioned that case in its notice. It said that the speech may have promoted animosity between religious groups and it might also show that votes are demanded on the basis of religion.
