Former CBI chief AP Singh booked in graft case

In an alleged corruption case, CBI has named its former director AP Singh, as one of the accused. AP Singh has been named along with controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi. Qureshi’s involvement is also being investigated by the Income Tax department and the Enforcement Directorate. It is alleged that Qureshi was the middleman for several government officials including AP Singh. It may be recalled that AP Singh had handled various important cases during his tenure including 2G spectrum case, CWG scam and Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case. However, after he retired, investigations revealed that he was in constant touch with Qureshi via Blackberry Messenger (BBM) platform. This fact has already been presented before the Supreme Court in 2014.

The case against AP Singh has been filed under sections 8, 9, 13 (2) and 13 (1) (d) of prevention of corruption act, which deal with corrupt activities by public servants and private persons using public servants in lieu of any favor. The case was filed based on a reference provided by Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief Karnal Singh. Other people named in the case include a Hyderabad based businessman Pradeep Koneru, son of Rajendra Prasad Koneru. As per BBM messages collected from Koneru’s mobile, it has been revealed that Qureshi was holding conversations with AP Singh on behalf of Koneru regarding bail and discharge matters of Koneru’s father and brother Madhu Koneru.
