Bengaluru, January 24, 2015 : 92 finalists from 23 Government High schools took centre stage at the SahasraDeepika 6thAnnual Spelling Bee contest 2014-15, held on January 24, 2015. This unique Spelling Bee competition was hosted specifically for class 9, from Bangalore Area.
Archana of Krishna Iyer School secured the first place, Sandhya and Bindu Shree stood second and third respectively. The top 4 students were awarded with laptops and trophies.
After 5 successful years,SahasraDeepika International for Education has once again brought to the forefront this one of a kind Spelling Bee. This annual event, held at Kincha Auditorium, BharatiyaVidyaBhavan, serves as an inspiring platform for the not so fortunate students belonging to the city.
Prior to the competition 9thstandard students from the participating schools are provided with a dictionary which includes 500 English words from their textbooks; phonetic spelling in Kannada, definition and examples of usage in sentences. On one hand encouraging students to learn English and becoming proficient in the language, teachers and volunteers together strive to boost the confidence of students and take up this opportunity to shine.
This year 23 schools joined the program, compared to last year’s 14 schools, rise in number of participants showcases this platform as a promising and encouraging one. The event was presided by Honourable Justice Ram Mohan Reddy, Karnataka High Court and many other eminent personalities from various fields.
SahasraDeepika, which means a thousand lights, is a non-profit foundation that houses and educates underprivileged children in Bangalore, India. The spelling bee is the brainchild of Dr. T.V. Ramakrishna, founder and president of SahasraDeepika International for Education.Dr.Ramakrishna felt it was important to also reach out to the community and encourage as many children as possible to succeed. Since English skills are so important to their job prospects, he developed the spelling bee program.
