A gunman on Friday opened fire at Terminal 2 at the baggage claims area in the Fort Lauderdale – Hollywood International Airport in Florida. All the 13 shots fired by the gunamn found their target and hit a person. This resulted in the deaths of 5 people and serious injuries to 8 other people. The gunman was taken into custody by the Broward County Sheriff.
The gunman was a 26 year old former army man, Esteban Santiago. He had served with the Puerto Rico National Guard and had been in Iraq for over 10 months. People are still fighting for their lives in the hospitals. The gunman collected his firearm at the baggage claims area and started shooting indiscriminately. Federal aviation guidelines in the US allow passengers to check in unloaded firearms that are locked in a case. Bullets can also be checked in with your baggage.
The Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport is 25 miles north of Miami. Eye witnesses say they first believed it was firecrackers that went off, but later realized it was a gunamn shooting mercilessly.
Law enforcement officials said that he was undergoing treatment for his mental health disorders. In November, Esteban Santiago had contacted the FBI’s Anchorage office to inform them that he was being controlled by a US Intelligence agency. He also mentioned that the CIA was forcing him to watch ISIS videos in a bid to radicalize him. Officials say that he then agreed to go to a mental heath facility to undergo treatment.
