The term ‘diabetes mellitus’ is derived from 2 words: ‘diabetes’ meaning excess urination and ‘mellitus’ meaning honey. It’s a lifelong condition which is caused as the pancreases is unable to or produces insufficient quantity of insulin, an important hormone which allows the body cells to let in sugar (glucose). Hence, the sugar in the blood is unable to enter the body muscle in order to release energy which is why the sugar value in the blood gets too high. A person having a fasting blood sugar level of more than 150 mg/dl is termed as diabetic.
