India earned hard- fought 1-0 win over Spain in the second match in Valencia, Spain

Valencia (Spain), 16 February 2015: After the goal-less draw against Spain in the first match, India Women Team faced Spain once again today and displayed a spirited performance, registering a 1-0 win over Spain in the second match in Valencia, Spain. The matches are in preparation for the FIH World League Round 2, to be held in New Delhi from 07 – 15 March, 2015.

The Indian eves made a promising start by giving a neck-to-neck fight to Spain and both the teams made several attempts but unfortunately failed to convert the opportunities in goals. Just before the first half ended, Spain earned a penalty corner but failed to capitalize on it. While the two teams missed all the probabilities to open their scorecard, the score stood nil by the end of the first half.

Entering the second half of the game, the two teams looked more confident and displayed a better quality of game as the girls were in dire need of opening the score-card. As the India Women Team was in no mood to play out a draw this time, it was Vandana Katariya who opened the scoring for India and netted the lone goal from a field effort in the 38th minute and took a 1-0 lead.

After conceding the goal, Spain still continued to assert dominance in the entire session of the game but  India’s strong defence stood tall as the eves restricted the opponents from striking past the goal post. Putting all the efforts in search of an equaliser, Spain failed to open its score card and with this, India won the match by 1-0 against Spain.

The next game will be played against Dutch hockey club – Groningsche Cricket en Hockey Club (GCHC) on 19 February 2015.
