IPL 2017 Player Auction: Top bid for Ben Stokes; Indians rake in the moolah

At the IPL 2017 Player Auction, the highest bid was for England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who went for a staggering Rs 14.50 crore to Rising Pune Supergiants. The second highest bid was for left-arm fast bowler Tymal Mills, also from England, who commanded Rs 12 crore, as per the bid made by Royal Challengers Bangalore. There were a total of eight franchisees at the auction, which collectively spent Rs 91.15 crore to take in 66 players. The total players available for bidding were more than 350.

Indian players were in demand with 39 of them getting IPL contracts. Some of the top Indian earners included Tamil Nadu left-arm seamer T Natarajan (Rs 3 crore – Kings XI Punjab), Hyderabad pacer Mohammed Siraj (Rs 2.6 crore – the Sunrisers Hyderabad), Rajasthan’s left-arm pacer Aniket Chaudhary (Rs 2 crore – RCB), Karnataka’s young off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham (Rs 2 crore – Mumbai Indians), Varun Aaron (Rs 2.8 crore – Kings XI Punjab), leg-spinner Karn Sharma (Rs 3.2 crore – Mumbai Indians), and  left-arm spinner Pawan Negi (Rs 1 crore – RCB). However, some Indian players faced disappointment, as they were not selected by any of the franchisees. Cheteshwar Pujara, Ishant Sharma, and Irfan Pathan were among those who were not selected.
