J&K Police gets the highest number of gallantry awards; 32 in total

Jammu & Kashmir Police has been awarded the highest number of gallantry awards this year. From the total of 100 gallantry awards announced, J&K police personnel have bagged 32 in total. The most notable among these was the officer who was awarded two medals for his unparalleled bravery in two distinct counter-terror operations, wherein he displayed valor “beyond his call of normal duties”.

78 gallantry awards have been given to the various State Police forces, whereas 22 gallantry awards went to Central forces. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bagged 16 gallantry awards in total. Another striking aspect of this year’s gallantry awards is that 55% of these have been bagged by constables and head constables. As for the officer level personnel, there is only one IPS officer featured in the list. 10 gallantry awards were given posthumously; 4 to Chhattisgarh State Police, 2 to Jharkhand police personnel, and one each to Assam State police, CRPF, BSF, and SSB.

On the eve of Republic Day this year, a total of 777 police medals have been announced. Out of these, 100 are police gallantry awards, 597 police medals for meritorious service, and 80 President’s police medal for distinguished service. The President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (PPMG) has not been awarded to any police personnel this year since officials could not find a deserving candidate.
