Last chance to donate to Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas Appeal at The Avenue

FOLLOWING the huge success of last weekend, when hundreds of donations each day were donated to the Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas appeal at The Avenue Shopping Centre in Newton Mearns, this weekend (Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th November from 11am till 5pm) marks the last chance for donations to be made in time for Christmas.

The drop off point for donations is, once again, just outside M&S at The Avenue.

The heart-warming Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas appeal was established by local Newton Mearns mother Julie Griffin when she discovered that an alarming one in five children in Scotland are living in poverty.

Inspired by the shoebox appeal, Julie asked for friends and family to join and support her to help a child in need who otherwise would not receive a gift this Christmas. Her Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas Facebook group now has nearly 9000 members and she has received thousands of donations.

This appeal is supporting various charities, including: East Renfrewshire Good Causes (The Avenue’s nominated charity); Kinship Carers; Who Cares? Scotland; South West Glasgow Carers; South Ayrshire Food Bank and North Ayrshire Food Bank.

Michelle McCabe, Centre Manager at The Avenue, said: “We’re delighted to help Julie and her wonderful Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas appeal help make this festive season a Christmas to remember for anyone unfortunate enough to find themselves living in poverty.

“The Avenue has donated 10 pairs of our mini mascots to the appeal and various retailers have also donated gifts, including Waterstones and M&S, and we’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has donated to this worthwhile cause at the shopping centre. For those yet to do so, remember to pop down to The Avenue this weekend to make your donation!”

Appeal founder Julie Griffin added: “Imagine……waking up as a child on Christmas Day to no toys, gifts or a hot meal.” Now imagine that your generosity has turned that sad face into a bright happy excited child on Christmas morning. Giving is the true spirit of Christmas!
“There is no shortage of ways to give to the needy. The Shoe Box Christmas Gift is a tried and tested method for brightening the lives of thousands of children around the world. Glasgow needs charity to begin at home this year in these very hard times with help from its fellow communities.
“Preparing a Shoe Box Christmas Gift is a great way to get everyone, adults and children, involved in the spirit of giving. After all, when we give, we are the ones who reap the rewards.
“Decorating a shoe box filled with treats, gloves, toys or soft cuddly toys to love will be donated to the many children in and around Glasgow who will not receive gifts of any kind this Christmas. Selection boxes, toys, games and soft toys are also welcome. Help make a difference to a child’s life this Christmas!”

The Avenue Shopping Centre offers shoppers a warm and welcoming shopping experience conveniently located on the outskirts of Glasgow city centre.
