Great Place To Work India Celebrates Increase in Women Workforce to 26% in 2023, Emphasizing Diversity and Inclusion

Mumbai, September 27, 2023 – Great Place To Work® India, a leading authority on workplace culture, is delighted to announce the unveiling of its prestigious lists for the Best Workplaces™ for Women 2023 and Best Workplaces™ for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) 2023. In a groundbreaking shift, the Best Workplaces for Women 2023 are championing the cause of gender diversity. This year’s report reveals a remarkable 26% representation of women within the workforce, a significant increase from 21% in 2021. In parallel, the Best Workplaces for DEIB 2023 are blazing the trail towards creating equitable and inclusive environments for all employees. This report underscores the importance of promoting gender diversity in leadership roles to ensure continued progress.

While a 38% gap persists in women’s representation among industries with the highest and lowest female presence, there is a mere 2% gap in positive perception. This suggests that even in industries with lower female representation, women experience a favorable workplace culture. Additionally, 8% of CEOs of Indian organizations are women, with 32% of these women in senior leadership positions lacking female peers in their respective organizations.

Sectors like Education & Training and Non-profit and Charity Organizations, with 45% and 47% female representation, respectively, exhibit higher gender diversity and increased trust levels. Meanwhile, industries like Transportation and Manufacturing & Production, with lower gender diversity at 13% and 9%, still manage to achieve moderate to high trust levels among employees.

Organizations that prioritize a ‘For All’ experience witness a 14% increase in employee perceptions related to professional and leadership development, as well as employee involvement in decision-making.

Yeshasvini Ramaswamy, CEO of Great Place To Work® India, stated, “In today’s dynamic business landscape, recognizing the importance of gender diversity is not merely an ethical imperative but a strategic necessity. Our research underscores the significance of women’s representation in the workforce, particularly in light of the growing demographic of female consumers.

Our findings reveal that the Best Workplaces for Women in 2023 offer their female employees an extraordinary 5% higher satisfaction level, resulting in a remarkable 89% of women displaying a strong commitment to exceeding expectations in their roles. This underscores the profound impact of nurturing gender diversity. One of the most encouraging trends we’ve observed is the consistent upward trajectory of women’s representation in the workforce. It has risen from 21% in 2021 to an impressive 26% in 2023, with the best workplaces leading the way by employing 17% more women compared to their counterparts.

Nevertheless, there remains work to be done, particularly in elevating women to executive, C-level management, and CEO positions, where the representation has stagnated at 16% for the past two years. This highlights the ongoing importance of fostering greater gender diversity in leadership roles. I extend my warmest congratulations to the organizations acknowledged on the Best Workplaces in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging 2023 and Best Workplaces for Women 2023 lists, serving as a strong example for others to follow. Pertaining to the Best Workplaces in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging 2023 list, our research reflects the voices of over 6 lakh employees, with 28% representing historically excluded groups, predominantly women, and 3% from other historically excluded groups. In India’s rapidly evolving global market, our commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) goes beyond gender. It aspires to cultivate a culture that respects and celebrates uniqueness, fostering genuine belonging.

In conclusion, our collective endeavors are reshaping the workplace landscape in India and beyond. Together, we are forging a brighter, more inclusive future where everyone can thrive and contribute their best. Once again, congratulations, and let us continue this journey towards greater Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, for it is in unity that we discover strength and enduring success.”
