Patna’s Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) has created a controversy after it asked its employees to fill up the ‘Marital Declaration’ form, which had some of the most bizarre questions. Normally, a marital declaration form has the options ‘married’ and ‘unmarried’, but the form given by IGIMS to its employees had really shocking questions. For example, one of the entries requires employees to declare if they are a bachelor, widower or virgin. Another entry asks employees to reveal if they are married and have only one wife. The next entry asks women employees to declare if they are married to a person who has no other wife living. After that, employees are supposed to tell if they have more than one wife. In the next line, employees are asked to tell if they are married to a person who has another wife living.
Responding to the controversy, the Deputy Medical Superintendent of the institute, Dr. Manish Mandal said that the declaration form has been a regular feature starting from the time the institute was established. “Everyone has to fill this form which is part of Central Services Rules and this form is similar to what AIIMS in Delhi uses. If the Centre or AIIMS changes the format of the form in the future, we will also change it. This is not a new form and has been in practice since 1984 when IGIMS was established,” Mandal added.
