Men’s Fertility & Obesity

Dr RaghuveerKarne, Consultant Andrologist, Oasis Fertility

“Men’s waist has a direct relationship with their fertility. Obesity in males can affect sperm production and concentration. It may result in developmental issues in the embryo as well. The success rate of couples undergoing fertility treatment decreases when the male partner is obese.

Paternal obesity also increases the chance of obesity in the offspring.  As per Harvard research, obese men are 42 percent more likely to have a low sperm count than their normal-weight peers and 81 percent more likely to produce no sperm.

Men need to have a check on their weight as obesity can also cause other complications like diabetes, heart disease, etc. By making lifestyle changes right from adopting a healthy diet, proper sleep routine, and indulging in regular exercise, one can lose weight and increase the chances of fatherhood. Men also have the option of advanced treatment options like micro-TESE, micro varicocelectomy, TESA, PESA that can help in retrieving healthy sperms”.
