The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has developed a mobile application to help fishermen increase their daily catch of fish and also to reduce the cost of their daily operations. The app has been anmed MKRISHI@AFISHERIES, that can provide information regarding the sea and aims to help fishermen make fishing more environment friendly.
The app will provide information about Potential Fishing Zones (PFZ), temperature of the sea surface, weather updates and mainly inputs about the prsence of phytoplankton, which is the food for many fish species that are caught by fishermen. Information about PFZs helps fishermen avoid unnecessary fishing trips to places in search of fish.
This app was developed on the basis of a study conducted by the CMFRI on 13 fishing societies in Maharashtra, which allowed the Institute to come to the conclusion that with additional information, fishermen can save 30% of their fuel costs. This has a major impact on the environment as about 1.2% of all the oil production in the World is consumed in fishing.
The app has also been placed in the list of top 20 social innovations by Niti Aayog and the Ministry of External Affairs.
