Nearly 70% Political Funding Comes From Unknown Sources: ADR Report

In a shocking revelation, Association of Democratic Reforms said that around 70% income of the Indian political parties comes from unknown sources. The study was conducted from the period of 2014 and 2015. As per the results of this comprehensive study, the Congress has 83% income and the BJP has 65% income from unknown sources.

ADR Funding ReportAs per the Income Tax Act, Indian political parties are not required to pay tax if they received all donations above Rs. 20,000 in cheque; however they are required to keep details of donations below Rs. 20,000.

The study reveals that the parties get around 16% of their income from the known sources and 16% from sources such as asset sale, membership fees, bank interest, sale of publications etc.

Over the last 10 years, 83% of Congress’s income, totaling to Rs. 3,323.39 crore, and 65% of BJP’s income, totaling to Rs. 2,125.91 crore, came from unknown sources.

Uttar Predesh ‘s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has declared that it received no donations above Rs. 20,000 in the last decade. Thus 100% of BSP income came from unknown sources. Uttar Predesh’s ruling Samajwadi Party received 94% of its income, totaling to Rs. 766.27 crore from unknown sources. Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal received 86% of its income, totaling to Rs. 88.06 crore from unknown sources.

The report also indicated that during the last decade, a whopping 300-600% rise has been witnessed in the income of the political parties in India. From 2005 to 2015, a total of Rs. 11,367.34 crore have been disclosed as income by Indian political parties.

Thtis ADR report has come in a very precarious situation as most of the states covered in the report are in assembly election mode, which will be beginning next month.

In his New Year message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to all parties to clean up their funding.
