NGT issues notice to Delhi government regarding illegal factories in residential areas

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued a notice to Delhi government, seeking its response on unauthorized industrial units operating in residential areas in Delhi. The NGT has also sent the notice to other agencies such as Central Pollution Control Board, Delhi Pollution Control Committee, Delhi Jal Board, BSES Yamuna Power Ltd and others. The response is to be submitted by May 15. The notice was issued while hearing a plea filed by a Delhi resident Mohammed Shariq, who lives in Daryaganj.

The plea requests action against the illegal industrial units operating in residential areas and demands sealing of such units. The plea also seeks to initiate criminal proceedings against people who are running such illegal units. The plea mentions that several letters have been issued by the Public Grievances Commission of Delhi and Delhi Pollution Control Committee, but still these illegal units continue to operate. It may be recalled that the Supreme Court had already ordered the closure of such units in 2004, but relevant action has not been taken yet.
