 How a fume hood works

 Polypropylene fume hoods are closed and ventilated enclosed chambers. They contain toxic gases and vapours and protect the lab workers. The fume hoods in the past used to have an exhaust fan on top of it to pull out the air containing toxic materials. The present fume hoods are way advanced and come with HEPA or any other advanced filters to filter the poisonous air and then release it in the air.

A conventional or regular fume hood comes with a movable or sliding front sash and an interior baffle. The sash can also be different in different models. Some fume hoods have a horizontal sash, some have vertical ones and many models have a combination of horizontal and vertical sashes. These sashes create a barrier and protect the lab worker from inhaling the toxic or dangerous airborne particles.

The baffles direct the air to the filter for exhaustion. In the case of advanced fume hoods, the slots and baffles allow an even flow before exhaustion for a comprehensive and effective result. 

The baffles and slots should not be blocked. Because, if they are blocked, the air path is blocked, and air exhaustion does not work properly. The baffles are used to eliminate dead spots or the air backflow to ensure nothing toxic remains there.

There are mainly two types of polypropylene fume hoods-

  • Ductless fume hoods

The ductless polypropylene fume hoods are also called carbon-filtered fume hoods or filtered fume hoods. It is a type of filtered and self-contained lab fume hoods that do not come with a  duct. It is the more advanced fume hood. The ductless fume hoods come with HEPA filters or other kinds of filters. The air passes through these filters and gets filtered. Since the filters are advanced, the airborne toxic particles are filtered and only pure and filtered air is released.

Ductless fume hoods are better and cost-effective. It is because these fume hoods do not throw unfiltered air in the environment. Hence, they are effective in curbing air pollution to a good extent.   • Ducted fume hoods

The ducted fume hoods are traditional fume hoods that operate through a duct. It has an exhaust opening that is connected to a conduit that has an exhaust fan motor. The fan regulates air circulation and allows the sir to pass out from the fume hood through the duct. On top of that, the exhaust ensures no virus left behind.
