Tensions between US and North Korea reached a new high after North Korea said that its Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) can reach US. This comes after North Korea claims to have successfully tested its ICBM. North Korea also said that its missile has the capacity to withstand the extreme heat and pressure of re-entering the earth’s atmosphere and it can carry nuclear warheads. The claims cannot be verified, but if true, it would mean that North Korea now has the capability to target US cities with nuclear warheads. The US is treating this development as a serious threat to its security and has warned North Korea of appropriate action.
Gen. Vincent Brooks, the top American military commander in South Korea, said that the US is ready to go to war with North Korea if provoked. He said that US and South Korean military are on standby to take on any misadventure by North Korea. “Self-restraint, which is a choice, is all that separates armistice and war,” Gen. Brooks said. “We are able to change our choice when so ordered.…It would be a grave mistake for anyone to believe anything to the contrary.” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also said that North Korea’s recent moves have increased the threats posed to US.
