Aiming to offer services similar to airlines, Indian Railways is planning to launch Economy AC coaches. These will be available in special trains that will be entirely AC, something that would allow a new experience to train travellers. The fares of these economy AC coaches will be less than the normal 3AC tariff. Also, things like blankets will not be provided to travellers, which is normally the case in standard 3AC coaches. This service would be similar to the ‘no-frills’ services offered by low cost airline companies.
Currently, most express trains have Sleeper, Third AC, Second AC and First AC classes. There are some trains that are entirely AC such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Humsafar, and Tejas. The new economy AC trains will be launched on select routes to bring AC trains within the reach of more people. “There will not be any chilling effect like in other AC classes and the temperature will be fixed around 24-25 degrees. The aim is to make the passengers comfortable and not make them feel the outside heat,” said a senior railway ministry official.
