After Anil Kumble’s controversial exit, the search for the next Indian Cricket Team coach has begun. The most recent candidate to join the race is former Indian team director Ravi Shastri. A formal announcement regarding this was made today by Shastri. Shastri had served as the director of the Indian cricket team from 2014 to 2016. While he was the director, the Indian cricket team had reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2015. Shastri had applied for the post of coach of Indian cricket team last year as well, but at that time, preference was given to Anil Kumble.
It may be recalled that Anil Kumble’s exit as Indian cricket team coach was mired in controversy. A tweet posted by Kumble soon after he resigned provides enough clues to what might have been happening. The tweet posted by Kumble read, “The captain had reservations with my ‘style’… In light of these ‘reservations’. I believe it is best I hand over this responsibility to whomever the CAC and BCCI deem fit.” Sources said that Ravi Shastri is close to Indian skipper Virat Kohli, which would be good for the Indian cricket team.
