Sangeeta Azad

Sangeeta Azad is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Lalganj in the state of Uttar Pradesh. She is a member of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Sangeeta Azad defeated her nearest rival Neelam Sonkar of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by a margin of more than 1.6 lakh votes. It may be recalled that Neelam Sonkar had won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, 2019 Lok Sabha election was different, as BSP and Samajwadi Party (SP) had fought the elections together. This alliance between BSP and SP was effective in Uttar Pradesh in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Political experts said that 2019 Lok Sabha election in Lalganj was fought on caste politics and not on development. BJP had actually increased its vote percentage in 2019 in comparison to 2014 elections. ButBJP still lost the election, as it was fought primarily on caste considerations.
