Setback for Mamata Banerjee, as Supreme Court rejects Aadhaar plea

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has always protested against the rules and policies of the central government and the subject of Aadhaar was no different. While it is quite easy to see the benefits of Aadhaar, some people like Mamata Banerjee are continuing to protest against Aadhaar and their reasons are inexplicable to say the least. Thankfully, there are reasonable people at the top who can bring sense back to mercurial people like Mamata Banerjee. In a setback to Mamata that will make her understand that she can’t be the law, the Supreme Court has rejected the state government’s petition against Aadhaar. The top court said that Mamata Banerjee can approach the court in her individual capacity if she has problems with Aadhaar, but a state government cannot object to any of the rules passed by the Union government.

The state government had opposed the provision in Aadhaar, wherein it has been made mandatory to not provide benefits of social welfare schemes unless an individual has an Aadhaar card. This is obviously to check corruption, but some people are opposing it since they themselves are involved in corrupt activities. The Supreme Court rapped the West Bengal state government, saying that it does not have the right to challenge a law passed by the Union government. “Individual can file petition against the Act but not a state government. Let CM Mamata Banerjee file plea as a citizen and we will hear her petition,” the Supreme Court said.
