Sonia Gandhi, Indian National Congress President, was rushed to hospital forcing to cut short the impressive roadshow by a kilometer organised at the parliamentary constituency of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi —Varanasi — on Tuesday.
The reason Congress President falling ill is believed to be the overstretching of the roadshow. According to a few party members the rally was scheduled for two hours but was stretched by three hours. The stretching of the event in a hot day caused Gandhi illness and dehydration.
Later in the day the Congress supremo released a statement expressing regret of being deprived of getting ‘darshan’ of Kashi Vishwanathi during the auspicious month of Sawan.
Gandhi was rushed to Army Research and Referral Hospital for medical attention soon after she complained illness.
“Soniaji is stable now. She had suffered dehydration,” Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, a Congress leader, told the media at Delhi airport.
Modi has reportedly called up Delhi former chief minister and Congress UP‘s chief ministerial candidate Sheila Dixit to enquire about Gandhi’s health while she was still at Varanasi airport. The Indian prime minister had offered to help out by sending a doctor and a plane to take her to Delhi.
According to Congress party members Gandhi had showed no signs of illness prior to the roadshow. During the complete eight-kilometer roadshow she cheered by standing on her SUV companied by more than 50-car cavalcade that snaked through the roads of Varanasi.
Gandhi had started the rally by giving tribute to BR Ambedkar. Later during the rally she attacked the BJP leaders seeking for ‘Congress Mukt Bharat’.
She said, “Congress is not just a person or institution. One cannot think of modern India without the Congress.”
