Do you like smooth legs, but hate shaving because you have to do it so often? And do you think that the resin strips from the store cause too much waste? Then there is good news: it can also be different! With a few ingredients and a little patience, you can easily make sugar resins at home.
Using sugar for hair removal originated in the Persian Empire around 1900 BC. Until the first century BC, sugar was only available in the Persian Empire. The use of sugar for hair removal is called sugaring, sugar resins or Persian resins . In the Middle East it is also known as sukkar or halawa , in Turkey as ada and in Iran as moum . With a few other ingredients the sugar is made into a kind of paste with which the skin can be depilated. Learn more wax sugar
How does it work?
Sugar resins are often compared to regular resins. With sugar resins, a type of sugar paste is used that only removes the hair and does not adhere to the skin. This makes it (if all goes well) less painful than regular waxing. The paste can be used at room temperature or lukewarm.
DIY Sugar Resin
In Arab cultures, many families have their own recipe that is passed down from mother to daughter for generations. So there are many variations on the recipe, but below you will find a tested and proven recipe.
2 cups of sugar
3 tablespoons of lemon juice (45 ml)
3 tablespoons of water (45 ml)
Saucepan with thick bottom
Sugar thermometer (also possible without)
Plastic container with lid / weck jar (something to store your resin)
Making the resin
Put all the ingredients together in the pan and put the pan on a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Turn the gas low (or turn your hob on a low setting) and put your sugar thermometer on the pan, with the pin in the sugar mixture of course.
When the mixture reaches 120 ° C, remove it from the heat. This can take a while so good practice in patience. And BEWARE because it is LOEIHEET.
Let the mixture cool for a few hours and pour it into your clean container / weck jar to keep it in.
Using the resin
You can use the resin at room temperature. If the resin is just not flexible enough, you can heat it au bain marie to lukewarm.
Thoroughly clean and dry the area where you are going to resins.
Take a ball of about 3-4 cm in diameter of the resin and spread it on your skin against the direction of your hair growth.
Pull it off in the direction of your skin’s growth.
You can depilate large areas of skin with this one small ball of wax.
In the video below you can see how to make the resin (without a sugar thermometer) and how to use it. So if you do have a sugar thermometer, all you have to do is wait for your mixture to reach the desired temperature.
