In a breakthrough research, scientists have found that the sixth mass extinction event on earth is already happening. The results are based on data related to biological annihilation of wildlife. In the study, scientists analyzed various types of species, including both common and rare species. What they found was startling since the data suggested that billions of regional or local populations have been lost. The scientists have come to the conclusion that such mass extinction is happening due to overpopulation and overconsumption by humans. Scientists also said that humans only have a very small amount of time to make changes to protect the environment.
The study has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study was led by Prof Gerardo Ceballos from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Speaking about the study, he said, “The situation has become so bad it would not be ethical not to use strong language.” According to the study, billions of populations comprising birds, reptiles, mammals, amphibians, etc. have been lost all across the planet, something that points out to the sixth mass extinction event being already underway on earth.
