TMC in trouble, as CBI registers FIR against 12 of its top leaders

Taking action in the Narada sting case, the CBI has filed an FIR against 12 Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders. It may be recalled that the Narada scam relates to various sting videos that show many TMC ministers and MPs accepting bribes. The sting videos were shot by over a period of two years and were aired just a few days prior to the 2016 assembly polls in Bengal. The videos had prompted TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee to comment that it was a political conspiracy.

The FIR filed by CBI includes names of some of the most powerful leaders in TMC. The FIR has been filed against Lok Sabha MPs Saugata Roy, Suvendu Adhikari, Sultan Ahmed, Aparupa Poddar, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, and Prasun Banerjee; ministers Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad (Bobby) Hakim, and Madan Mitra; MLA Iqbal Ahmed; MLA and Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee and IPS officer S M H Mirza. These people have been booked under Sections 7 (Public servant taking gratification other than legal remuneration) and 13 (criminal misconduct by a public servant) of POCA (Prevention of Corruption Act). Criminal conspiracy charges of IPC (section 120B) have also been filed.
