In a development that clearly shows the regressive nature of certain communities, Ishrat Jahan, who is one of the five petitioners in the triple talaq case, has received threats and warnings after the Supreme Court announced its decision that triple talaq is invalid and unconstitutional. What is troubling is that the threats have been issued by people of her own community including her in-laws and her neighbors. This shows that the community has a mind of its own and it does not care what the top court has to say in a given case. In the wake of the threats issued to her, Ishrat Jahan has requested for security cover for herself and her children. She is afraid that verbal warnings can easily escalate into abuse and even lead to physical harm.
Nazia Elahi Khan, the legal advisor of Ishrat Jahan said that her in-laws and neighbors have started targeting her since they believe that she has worked against the interests of the community. “Ishrat and her children are being subjected to abuses and threats by her neighbors and some of her in-laws who also stay at Pilkhana in Howrah, the locality where she lives with her children,” Khan said. Ishrat Jahan has already written a letter to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, requesting her to provide protection to her and her children.
