UN Security Council members divided over Myanmar issue

In a development that shows that the world is divided into two factions, China and Russia have supported the Myanmar government with respect to its recent decision related to the action taken against Rohingya Muslim militants. It may be recalled that Rohingya Muslims militants had attacked police and army posts in Myanmar, which had prompted the government to take action against them. In the military action that followed, lakhs of Rohingya people have fled Myanmar fearing ill-treatment by Myanmar Army. In the UN Security Council meeting that took up the matter of Myanmar for the first time, China and Russia supported the actions of the Myanmar government. On the other hand, countries like US, France and Britain said that the ethnic cleansing should be stopped.

Keeping in view the large scale migration of Muslim Rohingya people, which has now crossed the 5 lakh mark, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres requested the UN Security Council to take strong action to stop the mass exodus of people. Guterres said that Myanmar should immediately stop the military action and the country should take back the people that have fled the country in recent times. At the UN Security Council meeting, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said, “We cannot be afraid to call the actions of the Burmese authorities what they appear to be: a brutal, sustained campaign to cleanse the country of an ethnic minority.” However, these words don’t hold much power since Russia and China have extended their support to Myanmar.
