The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has said that India is the second country with a large Diaspora spread all across the world; the first one in the list is China. According to the estimated calculations, around 25 million Indian population is based in some of the major regions of the globe. In this article, we have listed some of the places outside India with the maximum Indian population.
- Mauritius: This is one of the countries with the major Indian population. The Indians here comprise of 65.8% of a total population of Mauritius and are address as Indo-Mauritians. The main language spoke among the Indo-Mauritians are Creole, English, and French. However, some of the Indian languages like Tamil, Marathi, Odia, Hindi, Telugu, Bhojpuri, and Urdu are still used.
- United Kingdom: The community of Indians in the UK is completing its third generation, with the second largest population of Indians outside of Asia. When the first generation of Indians entered the United Kingdom they were widely disrespected and worked mainly as manual labours. However, today most of the Indians are found in the field of business, medicine, and law achieving heights of success all across the United Kingdom. According to the latest census, around 1,451,862 people with Indian origin are based in the UK.
- United States of America: The US comprises of largest Indian population outside of Asia. The Indians immigrated to the United States as early as the 19th and 20th century and the current population in the New York City and New Jersey of Indians are somewhat around 679,173. While the earliest group of Indians entered to the US as taxi drivers, farmers, and labourers, the scenario is completely altered today as Indians move as professionals who have completed their graduation in the US work in some of the major sectors of the Nation-States.
Canada: In the year 2016, Canada was found to accommodate 1,541,955 people who belonged to the Indian population. Among the first settlers of the Indian population were the soldiers from the Indian Army who bypassed Canada in the year 1897 to attend the Diamond Jubilee celebration of Queen Victoria. Most of the Indians have immigrated to the larger centres like Vancouver and Toronto, while smaller communities have found to be developing in parts of Calgary, Montreal, and Edmonton. In Vancouver, a place called “Little India” exists where most of the Indians stay.
