What is Difference between Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem

The terms self-esteem and self-confidence are usually used interchangeably as referring to how you feel about yourself. Both of these words are very similar, but they are two different concepts. In order to improve your overall sense of self it is important to understand role of both of these words.

When People understand how to build their self-confidence than their self-esteem respectively, they usually end up with a long list of abilities and achievements. But if people tends to focus on their imperfections and failures, this will hide them behind their certificates and achievements. In order to be successful in your life you need to focus on your self-confidence and self-esteem. This will help you to cope up with the society.

 But in order to understand difference between both concepts you need to know their exact meanings.

Self Esteem

“Esteem” comes from the Latin word “estimareand its meaning is “to appraise, value, rate yourself. It refers to your cognitive and above all emotional appraisal of your own worth. It is the matrix through which you think, feel, and act, and reflects and determines your relation to yourselves, to others, and to the world. It involves how you feel about yourself, involving how much esteem, positive attitude or self-love you have. Self-esteem usually develops from experiences and situations how you view yourself today.

When you start to love yourself, your self-esteem improves, which increases your confidence. When you are able to build confident in every aspect of your life, you will be able to increase your overall sense of esteem. You will be able to work on both of these at the same time.

Low Self- Esteem

When you feel that you have low self-esteem, and you constantly feels that you are not good enough. This concept develops over your entire life. This will leads you towards a series of unhealthy relationships. At this stage you need to recognize that you have negative script, you are now better able to change it.

On the positive side, you are confident about being an amazing cook, a caring friend, disciplined and very organized in your life. You know and believe this about yourself and feels confident in these areas. By focusing on the things you are confident in and working on changing your negative self-talk, you are improving both your self-esteem and self-confidence.

Healthy Self-Esteem

Healthy self-esteem do not tend the people to support themselves up with external parameters like income, status, or dependence unhealthy items such as alcohol or drugs. Despite that they treat themselves with respect and they take great care of their health, community, and environment. They are able to utilize themselves completely in different projects because they have courage to deal with failure or rejection. Even though they mostly suffers hurt and disappointment but their setbacks never damage or diminish them. They tend to be open to growth experiences and meaningful relationships, able to take risk, and have courage to accept and forgive themselves and others.


Confidence” is derived from Latin word “fidere” meaning to trust. To be self-confident is to trust in yourself and in particular is your ability to engage successfully or at least adequately with the world. A self-confident person is ready to accept new challenges, seize opportunities, able to deal with difficult situations.

Just as self-confidence lead towards successful experience, successful experience lead towards self-confidence. Although any successful experience contributes to your overall confidence. It is of course possible that you are highly confident in one area, such as dancing or cooking but very insecure in another such as statistics or singing.

Courage takes over in the absence of confidence. Like if a person is not confident in diving from a height of 10 meters unless such person have the courage to dive from a height of 10 meters. A courageous person is a person with limitless capabilities and possibilities in every aspect as courage requires greater strength.

Self-confidence involves how you feel about your capabilities and abilities and it vary from situation to situation. You may have healthy self-esteem in one aspect, but have low confidence in other aspect of life.

When you start loving yourself, your self-esteem tends to improve a lot, which increases your self-confidence and you become highly confident in every aspect of your life. In the same way when your confidence increases in different areas of your life, this will increase your overall sense of esteem. You can work on self-confidence and self-estimate at the same time.

Self-confidence and self-esteem do not always tend to go hand in hand. It is possible that you have high self-confidence and have profoundly low self-esteem,  for example in case of many performers and celebrities, who will be able to perform before an audience of thousands but at the same time they damage and even kill themselves with drugs.
