In what has been described as a Government to Government collaboration between India and Russia, the Russian Government is helping the Indian Railways to make its trains faster. In a pilot project that is currently being worked upon for a train track that is for a 575 km stretch between Nagpur and Secundrabad. The target is to raise the speed of the trains to over 200 kilometres per hour.
RZD International is a subsidiary company of the Russian Railways, that has been established specially for this reason. Currently Indian trains travel at a maximum speed of 120 kliometres per hour and the Government wishes to increase this to 200 km/ hr in order to have more trains running on the same tracks.
Railway agencies from Japan, Germany, Great Britan and France are already working closely with India to mordernise Indian railways. This will be Russia’s first foray into India for Railways mordernization. The Gatiman express that runs between Delhi and Agra is currently one of India’s fastest trains that runs at 160 km/ hr. The first goal of the Indian railways will be to get the speed of the Gatiman express to 200km/ hr.
