Someone has rightfully said that the beauty of politics is in serving the people. When YS Chowdary chose to enter politics in 2010, it was for this precise reason. He had done all he can to help and give back to the community through the CSR arm of Sujana Group. He even instituted a trust to promote this endeavour. Even so, it did not seem enough. It was then, that Sujana Chowdary, as he is so popularly known, set out on his political journey.
YS Chowdary entered politics in 2010 when he ran virtually unopposed was elected to the Rajya Sabha, representing the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from Andhra Pradesh on June 22, 2010. This was just the start. Four years down the line in 2014, Sujana Chowdary was elected as the TDP’s Parliamentary leader on June 4. Later that year, as part of the first cabinet expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA government, he was given a seat in the cabinet.
On November 9, 2014, YS Chowdary was appointed to the role of Minister of State for Science & Technology and was part of the Union Council of Ministers. He held this position till March 8, 2018. In addition, he was also a member of the Indo-Singapore Parliamentary Friendship Group – a role he relished as the two countries sought to strengthen their bilateral ties.
A man of many talents, Sujana Chowdary was also appointed to various other roles and responsibilities. He was a member of the Government of India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce, the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and the Parliamentary Forum on Youth. In 2016, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for a second time, and continues in this role till today.
In June 2019, YS Chowdary joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with three other TDP members – CM Ramesh, TG Venkatesh and G Mohan Rao. Citing his vision of working for the people, Sujana Chowdary took on his new role with much enthusiasm and began working towards nation building. A firm believer in nation before self, he began taking a more proactive approach towards developing the community.
His commitment to the community and the people he serves was visible in his decision to adopt two villages under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) programme. The initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2014, called on every member of Parliament to adopt at least one village and assume the responsibility for its development.
Under this scheme, Sujana Chowdary adopted two villages – Ponnavaram, near Vijayawada, and Palaparru, in Guntur district. The transformation changes witnessed in the two villages are exemplary. Sticking to his core belief that good quality education, healthcare, and a clean environment form three key pillars of nation-building, YS Chowdary initiated a programme of rebuilding and transformation.
In Ponnavaram and Palaparru, quality education was made accessible by introducing digital learning in the classrooms and providing free Wi-Fi and books. Medical camps were arranged and drainage systems and toilets constructed to improve living standards and boost healthcare and sanitation. The responsibility for the physical, social, cultural, institutional, and infrastructural development of the two villages was shouldered by Sujana Chowdary, and made a huge impact in the lives of the villagers.
“I’m not a career politician,” YS Chowdary would often say and he follows it to the T. Even as his Rajya Sabha term comes to an end soon, he is unfazed. Working for the people is cardinal to Sujana Chowdary’s life, and he will continue to do so with, or without a political office.
